Service-Learning Experiences at IUPUI

My first service learning experience was the Monumental Marathon for Kids. When I heard that we were going to be working with little kids I didn't want to do it as I wasn't a fan of little kids. My service learning consisted of meeting with the IPS (Indianapolis Public Schools) that I chose to attend once a week every Monday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. At my service learning the running program supervisor, Mrs. Cook, assigned us a grade to work with. I happened to work with the youngest grades being first and second graders. We stretched, played running games, and did warm-up laps to prepare the kids for the race for six weeks. During those six weeks I grew more comfortable around them and it changed my view on little kids. I'm so glad I got to experience this my first semester at IUPUI.

Service Learning Experience With PARCS

In the spring semester of 2019, I had the experience of teaching a senior citizen group fitness class. This wasn't my favorite experience because I wasn't used to standing in front of a group of people and talking. I didn't like public speaking at the time and really struggled in the department. I had two other classmates in my group to help teach and I did mostly all the talking. Another thing was the people in this group fitness class were kind of rude and that ruined the experience for me. This wasn't my favorite service-learning experience at all.

Service Learning Experience With Motor Activity Clinic

In the spring semester of 2021, I had the experience of working with a child that has a physical disability. The purpose of this clinic is to help children with disabilities work on their basic motor skills. I made an individualized plan for my client each week that we did together to help progress his motor skills. This service-learning experience was one of my favorites. It was really hands-on and after everything that happened with Covid it was nice to be in person for this experience.

Camp Brosius

In the summer semester of 2021, I did Camp Brosius. Because of covid we couldn't go to Wisconsin and do the normal one-week trip. Instead, Camp Brosius was In a grassy field next to Carroll Stadium where we met once a week for 6 weeks. Not ideal but it worked. Still had the experience of meeting new people I had never met or knew were in my major. I had a lot of fun doing team-building activities and learning new leadership skills.

Service Learning with Wellness Coaching

In the fall semester of 2021, I took a class where one of our service-learning experiences was wellness coaching. We find a client who would be interested in being wellness coached. I wellness coached a former co-worker from a previous job I worked at. This service-learning experience was fun to do. I got to know my co-worker more and help her achieve her goals throughout those 6 weeks.

Service Learning with INShape at NIFS

In this spring semester of this year, I took INShape which is my internship class. InShape is a program offered to IUPUI faculty and students who are looking to get in shape. I got assigned a client and we went over what her SMART goals were that she would like to achieve by the end of INShape. This experience was a really big learning experience where I had to apply the knowledge I learned from all the previous classes I have taken. It was a really tough semester but I got through it and I feel better now knowing I actually did know what I was doing. Personal Training isn't what I'm interested in doing at all but I'm glad I had this experience.
